The term "biometrics" refers to the science and technology of measuring and analyzing biological data.  It might sound like the stuff of spy movies -- fingerprints or the shape of a hand used for secure, verified identification.  Biometric data is an authentication credential, like a user id and password.

In the world of employee payroll, biometrics refers to biometric time clocks that measure and analyze an employee's hand or finger characteristics for identification purposes.

Security, Accuracy

These clocks offer a new level of security and accuracy to an employee time and attendance system.  The bottom-line benefit is that biometric clocks require employees to be present in order to punch.  Fingerprint or hand-punch readers eliminate time fraud -- or buddy punching -- and provide security access control if needed in your workplace.

Biometric Information

An efficient and cost-effective biometric time clock is one that measures hand geometry or fingerprint characteristics.  Employees sign in for work using their hand or finger as their identification badge.  When employees clock in, the systems ask for a two- to ten- digit personal identification number that was assigned when employees enroll in the terminal.  When this number is combined with a hand scan, there is minimal chance that an employee can sign in for someone else.

Data Updates

To identify employees through biometric clocks available from American Time Data, the biometric terminals develop a template that represents an employee's hand or finger.  This template is updated every time an employee scans into work.  The update feature allows the clock to keep up with changes to employee hand size due to weight gain, weight loss, and other changes.

Integrated Systems

Biometric time clocks interface directly with an organization's time keeping system for accurate and efficient labor and wage calculations.

Biometric time clocks are proven technology for security and access control in high security settings like airports and utility plants.  They're also becoming more common in food service, schools, universities, and manufacturing plants.
